Water Heater Reviews
The Water Heaters Review website is intended to provide reviews and ratings on hot water heaters to help you when it comes time to buy your next water heater. This includes water heater ratings on all the top models and manufacturers.
We all need hot water heaters of some sort in our homes. The question is which is the best type to install? While budget is generally an important factor, so too is the size of the unit. But for many people today, environmental issues and the need for high efficiency units rates high, if not at the top of their list of priorities.
Types of hot water heaters for domestic use
There is, perhaps surprisingly, quite a lot of choice when it comes to hot water heaters for our homes. Some have tanks or cylinders, while others are tankless. In addition, varying designs are powered by different forms of energy. Given the range of types and models available, reviewing water heater ratings before deciding on the best heater for you.
The primary domestic hot water heater options are:
- gas – both conventional and hybrid
- electric – both conventional and hybrid
- tankless – which may be powered by gas or electricity
- solar – which is often combined with electricity as a back-up
While you might be forgiven for thinking that a hybrid system is one that utilizes a combination of solar heating and another form of energy, these are in fact categorized as solar hot water heaters. Hybrid heaters, on the other hand, feature a combination of technologies that have been used to manufacture conventional and tankless water heaters.
Deciding which type is for you
When you start looking for a hot water heater, you need to decide which basic sort you prefer, and then ascertain what is available in terms of specific models. If you try to wade through reviews and ratings of every type and model heater on the market, not only will you waste a lot of time, but undoubtedly you will become very confused. Like all things in life, it is important to compare apples with apples (like with like) – or at least try to compare items that are basically similar to one another. This is not to say that you shouldn't review water heater ratings - but it does make sense to narrow down the type of heater most suitable for you before moving on to the ratings.
Also remember to check whether units are ENERGY STAR qualified, and whether they are eligible for federal tax credit. This can make an enormous difference in terms of running costs and efficiency.
The following is some general information about the different types that should help you to choose the best hot water heater in its class or range.
Gas hot water heaters operate using either natural gas, which is piped to our homes, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), supplied in cylinders. There are both standard and high-energy models, to cater for all needs, and a range of sizes, from smaller under-sink instantaneous heaters to larger, much more efficient hybrid designs. While the majority of gas units can only service one appliance or outlet at a time, newer models can supply water to two, a shower and a washing machine for instance, at the same time.
Electric hot water heaters are still the most common type in service today, and there are numerous variations, both big and small. Energy efficiency is important, and you will find that some types are considerably more energy efficient than others, particularly hybrid electric heat pump water heaters. When you review the different models, be sure to compare as many features as possible, including:
- capacity,
- output,
- the mode in which the heater is able to operate (for example some can switch between different modes including high efficiency, hybrid, electric and vacation),
- any conservation features,
- price of the unit,
- cost of installation.
Tankless hot water heaters are generally considered to be energy efficient. They are also more compact because they do not incorporate any type of tank or cylinder in which to store water. Furthermore, there is a choice between gas-powered and electrically operated models, although gas is considered to provide a higher flow rate of water. While the old-fashioned instantaneous water heaters many people used under sinks in their offices 20-30 years ago are technically tankless, domestic models being manufactured today are considerably more sophisticated and efficient. There are some models that manufacturers claim will save you as much 50% on energy costs.
Solar hot water heaters are now first choice for more and more households. While there are several various on the theme, they generally have solar panels (photovoltaic cells) that absorb energy from the sun, and a cylinder where the water is stored. Many incorporate heat transfer fluid that heats the water. Cylinders are generally bigger than those used for conventional hot water heaters, at least in terms of delivery. So if a solar heater has a small cylinder, first ask about output volumes before considering that it will be easier to accommodate than one with a much bigger tank.
Water heater ratings
You will find that many hot water heaters have ratings that will help you choose the best available in the range that appeals to you. There are also reviews that are usually helpful when it comes to making a final choice.
